Patapsco Valley State Park

Patapsco Valley State Park

Family photos in Patapsco Valley

Patapsco Valley State Park winds along the Patapsco River right through our corner of Maryland, and it's one of my favorite places to photograph families.

Tall trees filter the light, the river adds movement and sparkle, and there's room for kids to run, explore and be themselves. It looks different every season: fresh green in spring, deep shade in summer, glowing color in fall, and quiet, cozy tones in winter.

Spots I love in the park

  • The Swinging Bridge in the Orange Grove area, a favorite for playful, adventurous photos.
  • River banks and rock outcrops for skipping-stones moments and wide, airy portraits.
  • Wooded trails with soft, even light, perfect for little ones and newborn-and-family walks.
  • Historic stone landmarks nearby, like the Thomas Viaduct, for a timeless backdrop.

Good to know

The park is large, with several entrances. I'll send you the exact meeting spot and parking details once we pick a date. Some park areas charge a small day-use fee, and trails can be muddy after rain, so comfortable shoes are a good idea.

Golden hour, the hour or so before sunset, gives the warmest light under the trees. Morning sessions are lovely in summer when it's cooler and quieter.
